I just saw this pop up on my Twitter feed today:
Oh. My. God.
That’s so goddamn scary.
Most of you who read this know where I go to school. I’m in the South Loop in Chicago, and there are TONS of law schools all around. One is right across the street, Kent is a little bit away but not far at all, Loyola’s right nearby, and Northwestern is right along the lake. And, of course, the University of Chicago is a stone’s throw away in Hyde Park by the Science and Industry Museum.
I’ve got a couple friends at Northwestern Law, too. And now I want to text them and see if they’re all right, but whenever something like this happens, I always flash to those ridiculous movies where there’s a gunman and he’s looking for people and someone’s phone makes a sound and he (or she) FINDS them all and bad things happen.
I’m seriously not trying to make light of this situation. Seriously. I would never do that. I’m just saying I guess I’ll wait and see what other information I can get from other sources. Besides, the people in that building with that gunman probably have more important things to do than answer my phone call.
I can’t even imagine being in this situation. I hope it’s resolved quickly before anyone gets hurt.
The other day, a 3L at Loyola killed himself, and today Northwestern Law has a gunman. Law school does attract the crazy, and again, I’m not trying to be funny about this. And as far as I know, most institutions of learning have lock-down procedures for just this sort of thing. I remember being in high school and practicing the drill for an armed gunman in the building. It was easier for us because our school was designed by a prison architect. There were no windows and the walls were like a foot thick.
Ack! I hope this is all over with soon! Best thoughts to those at Northwestern right now.
