Ah, Mad Men. AMC finally got a hit. I’ll admit, I’m not a big fan of AMC anymore. I loved that channel when they showed Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movies, or when they did a marathon of my boyfriend, Cary Grant, and had him run around chasing things with Katherine Hepburn, who is awesome. But then they tried to convince me that Speed was an American Movie Classic, and that made me angry. So AMC and I decided not to be friends anymore.
If you watch Mad Men, you know of Christina Hendricks, who plays the office siren, and how awesome her wardrobe is. So awesome, in fact, that I’ve gotten a number of requests to do an outfit that is either a knock-off of one of hers, or something she might wear.

Here’s our lovely subject. What I’ve noticed about Christina’s character is that she wears bright colors that really highlight her beautiful hourglass figure, and with all sorts of little touches that remind us – subtly – of the decade. Aside from just plain bright colors, she wears a lot of jewel tones, staying away from pastels and earthy colors.
So here’s a look inspired by Christina Hendricks’s character that’s appropriate for the office and reflects some of that uniquely Mad Men flair we’ve all come to expect from this hit show.
Cable & Gauge V-Neck Short Sleeve Top with Inset in Festival Fuschia ………. $29.98
City Stretch Zip Pocket Pencil Skirt ………. $20.97
Unlisted Women’s Secret File Platform Pump ………. $49.95
Poppie Jones Chardonnay Suede Satchel ………. $29.95
Sim. Pearl Pin ………. $17.99
It’s an Inspired By look, so it’s over budget, but most of these are sale items, anyway.
We’ve got the pretty fuschia short-sleeve top that’s silhouette skimming and bright, paired up with a polished pencil skirt. Add a belt, whatever. I personally don’t like belts. Never wear them. Have waged war against them for years. It’s fine, until my pants start to slip down and I’m like, d’oh! No one wants to see that!
My wardrobe malfunctions aside…We’re pairing this with black platform pumps with the cute little snap for interest. We’ve got a nice dark purple satchel here. I avoided getting anything matchy because that would have turned this into a Pepto Bismol look, and I avoided a bright, vibrant purple because the focus here is on the bright color of the shirt, and a dark, deep purple plays that up best. It’s a monochromatic look in that sense, too, so it works. And last, we’ve got the little pearl brooch to put on the imaginary lapel for an added touch of elegance. Or something like it. I probably wouldn’t know elegance if I sat on it. But I do know this: it looks right purdy.
And there’s my Mad Men inspired look! Hope it passes muster!
